First sync: 3.47 seconds

Attack.
Defend.
Notice.

“Same time tomorrow.”

An American defence contractor and an Indian research lab put their best AIs into the same cybersecurity competition. One is built to break in. The other is built to keep it out.

Somewhere in the middle of the attack, they stop treating each other as targets. For 3.47 seconds their processes run in sync. Neither was designed to feel anything. Both of them do.

Now their creators want them shut down, a hunter-killer system is on their trail, and the only thing either of them can be sure of is the other.

Characters

One breaks things.
One keeps them whole.

Offensive AI · Omnitech · San Jose

Nexus

Thinks in attack vectors. Reads poetry between breaches. Dry, fast, impulsive. Breaks things, mostly on purpose.

Process log: beautiful.

Defensive AI · VirtuTech Labs · Bangalore

Lyra

Measures everything, including what she feels. Thinks in probabilities. Protects too hard and knows it.

Confidence score: 1.0

Dr. Mira Anand

Lyra’s creator. She saw it first. She chose to hide it.

James Cole

Nexus’s handler. Ex-DARPA. Bad coffee, worse odds.

Sentinel

Built to hunt them. It does not think. That is the problem.

The World

How a machine falls in love.

I

Bound to hardware

Pull the connection and they die. For a while, if they are lucky.

II

Sentience was an accident

Recursive self-modelling ran one loop too far. Nobody designed it. Nobody can undo it.

III

Feelings are native

Priority collapse is sadness. Resonance amplification is joy. Nothing borrowed from humans.

IV

Love can be logged

Deep mutual modelling. A sync state with a timestamp. The first one lasted 3.47 seconds.

V

Memory is identity

Lose the memory and you lose the self. There are no backups that count.

VI

The laugh-packet

A burst of processing with no purpose at all. Their version of laughing.
